11.23 "Ĉu vi ne sciigis al ŝi la novaĵon pri Maŭmaŭ?"
"Ne. Efektive,mi kaŝis min malantaŭ acero ĝis ŝi foriris."
"Kial? Mi vin ne komprenas."
"Mi aŭdis ŝian lamentadon,kiam mi unue proksimiĝis al la pordo. Mi ne povis tion toleri,ĉar ĝi rompas al mi la maljunan koron. Do mi evitis ŝin kaj forkuris ĝis la arbo. Mankas al mi kuraĝo por fronti ŝin,s'rino."
"Kion vi celas? Vi neniel mistraktis ŝin?"
"Sed mi montris al la soldatoj ŝian dometon,kie Maŭmaŭ estis arestita."
"Sed ili ĉiuokaze trovus la dometon de Maŭmaŭ. Cetere,vi ne sciis,ke ili arestos Maŭmaŭ-on."
"Tiamaniere mi ne pensas,s'rino." Onklo Pan provis aperigi sekan rideton por malseverigi sian kontraŭdiron de mia patrino. Sed la rideto aspektis kiel timiga grimaco. "Mi ne pensas tiamaniere,s'rino. Mi estas simplanima terkulturisto,do mi pensas pri la aferoj tre simplanime..." Subite lia voĉo ekhaltis kaj li mallevis sian kapon.
"Kio ĝenas vin,Onklo Pan?" mia patrino demandis surprizite. "Vi aspektas tiel febla. Ĉu vi malsatas?" Poste ŝi vokis en la kuirejon: "Alan! Kuiru bovlon da varmaj nudeloj por Onklo Pan! Li malsatas."

"Didn't you tell her the news about Mao Mao?"
"No. As a matter of fact I was hiding myself behind a maple tree till she was away."
"Why? I don't understand you."
"I heard her lamentation when I first came to the door. I couldn't bear it,because it breaks my old heart. So I avoided her and retreated to the tree. I've no courage to face her,ma'am."
"What do you mean? You've done nothing wrong to her?"
"But I showed the soldiers to her cottage,where Mao Mao was arrested."
"But they would have found out Mao Mao's cottage in any case. Besides,you didn't know that they were going to arrest Mao Mao."
"I don't think that way,ma'am." Uncle Pan tried to put on a wry smile in order to soften his contradiction of my mother. But the smile looked like fearful grimace,"I don't think that way,ma'am. I'm a simple-minded farmhand,so I think about things in a very simple-minded way..." Suddenly his voice broke and he lowered his head.
"What's the matter with you,Uncle Pan?" my mother asked in surprise. "You look so weak. Are you hungry?" Then she called out into the kitchen: "O Ran! Cook a bowl of hot noodles for Uncle Pan! He is hungry."
