11.25 "Ĉu oni ne eltiris lin?"
"Ili tion faris. Sed senutile,ĉar Maŭmaŭ estis jam mortinta. Liajn manojn kunligis la katenoj,do li ne povis barakti. Li enfalis la akvon kiel ŝtono,tiel diris al mi la soldato."
"Ĉu vi certas,ke la historio estas vera?" La okuloj de mia patrino dilatiĝis pro hororo.
"Absolute vera,s'rino,ĉar mi vidis Maŭmaŭ-on per propraj okuloj. Tio estas terura vidaĵo,mi certigas vin. Lian kadavron oni elmontris sur la teramaso ne malproksime de la urbopordo. Ĝi estis ŝvelinta,pli ol ĉe mortinto pro hidropso. Kompatinda Maŭmaŭ,neniu ĝenis sin pri li. Li estis tute forgesita de la mondo. La revoluciuloj estas tre okupataj. Ĉiuj soldatoj okupiĝis pri militmanovroj. Kiam mi iris al la Gubernia Registaro kaj petis ĉerkon por entombigi Maŭmaŭ-on,oni diris,ke al ili mankas tempo por tio en la momento. Mi diris,ke tio ne estas justa al povrulo kiel Maŭmaŭ. Oni diris,ke helpi oni ne povas,ĉar la dekstruloj disigis sin de la revolucia potenco en la Provinca Ĉefurbo kaj komencas ofensivojn kontraŭ revolucio en diversaj lokoj;ke tiu reakcia movado ŝajnis disvastiĝi en tiun ĉi regionon ĉar ili estis tre potencaj,subtenataj tiel de fremdaj potencoj kiel de riĉaj bienuloj;kaj ke oni estas terure okupata starigante defendon en la regiono.

"They did. But it was of no use,because Mao Mao was already dead. His hands were bound together by the handcuffs,so he couldn't struggle. He fell into the water like a stone,so the soldier told me."
"Are you sure that the story is true?" My mother's eyes became dilated with horror.
"Absolutely true,ma'am,because I saw Mao Mao with my own eyes. It is a ghastly sight,I can assure you. His corpse was exposed on the mound not far from the city gate. It was all swollen,worse than a man dead of dropsy. Poor Mao Mao,no one bothered about him. He was altogether forgotten by the world. The revolutionaries were very busy. All the soldiers were engaged in military manoeuvres. When I went to the County Government and ask for a coffin to bury Mao Mao,they said that they had no time for that at the moment. I said it was not fair to a poor man like Mao Mao. They said that they couldn't help,that the right-wing people had separated themselves from the revolutionary forces in the Provincial Capital and were launching offensives at various points against revolution;that their reactionary movement seemed to be spreading out into this district because they were very powerful,being supported by both foreign Powers and rich landlords;and that they were terribly busy setting up defences in this district.
