12.1 Kelkajn tagojn post la malapero de Onklo Pan,Laŭ Liŭ vizitis nin. Lia vizito al nia dometo efikis kiel grava okazaĵo,ĉar li malofte venis ĉe nin de kiam li estiĝis Vickomisaro de Propagando,eĉ ne pro Alan. Ĉiam estis ŝi,kiu iris renkonti lin. Lin ĉiam okupadis la laboro,kiu estis plejparte plenumenda en la ĉefsidejo de la loka Revolucia Partio en la urbeto. Li revenis al la vilaĝo nur vespere,kaj li ĉiam kunportis subbrake grandan aron de afiŝoj kaj avizoj,kiun li tralegu vespere.
"Mi povas resti nur kelkajn minutojn,s'rino," li diris al mia patrino,surtabligante la propagandan materialaron. Tiu malvolviĝis,elmontrante serion de novaj karikaturoj,kiujn mi ne vidis antaŭe. La unua bildo vidigis lupon en uniformo de armea komandanto,kun densa vosto kurbigita kiel hoko kaj longa glavo ĉezone. Longa vico de soldatoj marŝis malantaŭ li. La rubriko legiĝis: La bienulo revenas por restarigi sian perditan prestiĝon kaj repreni liberigitajn servutulojn. Mia patrino ekrigardis ĝin senkomente. Nia rakontisto aldonis,"Mi foriras,s'rino,foriras eble longtempe. Mi venas por sciigi al vi novaĵon,kiu nepre interesos vin."
"Kio estas tio?" mia patrino demandis kun ektimiĝo kaj surpriziĝo,ĉar la vizaĝo de Laŭ Liŭ mienis escepte serioze.
"Novaĵon pri Onklo Pan," Laŭ Liŭ diris kviete,sed lia voĉo soleniĝis.

A few days after Uncle Pan's disappearance Lao Liu called on us. His visit to our house appeared like a great event,for he seldom come to see us since he had become the Assitant Commissar of Publicity,not even for the sake of O Ran. It was always she who went to meet him. He was always busy with his work,which had to be done mostly at the headquarters of the local Revolutionary Party in the town. He came back to the village only in the evenings,and he always had a huge bundle of posters and notices under his arms to be looked over at night.
"I have only a few minutes to stay,ma'am," he said to my mother,laying the bundle of propaganda materials on the table. It unrolled itself,displaying a set of new caricatures,which I had not seen before. The first picture showed a wolf in an army commander's uniform with its bushy tail curled up like a hook and a long sword dangling at its waist. A long file of troops were marching behind him. The caption read: The landlord is coming back to restore his lost prestige and liberated serfs. My mother gave a glance at it without a comment. Our ex-story-teller added,"I'm leaving,ma'am,leaving perhaps for a long while. I come to tell you news which you must be interested to hear."
"What is it?" my mother asked him both with alarm and surprise,for Lao Liu's face had an exceptionally serious air.
"News about Uncle Pan," Lao Liu said quietly,but his voice grew heavy.
