12.3 "Silentu,s'rino. Mi ĝisvenos lin baldaŭ. Tio ne okupos minuton," Laŭ Liŭ certigis ŝin,ankoraŭ kvieta kaj neperturbita kiel rakontisto. Kaj li daŭrigis sian antaŭparolon: "Vidu,ĝuste pro tiu punkto mi ekhavis zorgojn tuj,kiam mi aŭdis de Alan la novaĵon pri la foriro de Onklo Pan. Supozu ni,ke li trafus unu el la patroloj kaj oni erare taksus lin sabotisto aŭ spiono..."
"Kion?" mia patrino ekkriis.
" Volu silenti,mi petas. Mi ĝisvenas la temon," Laŭ Liŭ diris. "Do mi faris mian plejeblon eltrovi,ĉu io okazis al li. Vidu,mi ne estas malpli ol vi maltrankvila pri li. Mia rilatiĝo kun Alan multe pli proksimigis min al tiu familio. Li estas tiel same mia onklo,kiel onklo de Alan. Mi pridemandis miajn amikojn en la Ĉefsidejo de la Kamparana Volontula Brigado en la gubernia urbo pri li. Ili informis min,ke ili kaptis maljunan kamparanon kun bovino unu nokton lastatempe. La patroloj preskaŭ mortigis lin,supozante lin ŝtelisto aŭ spiono por Ĉu Min. Li estis tre malbonŝanca,s'rino. Li eble sukcesus trapasi la distrikton,se ne temus pri la bovino. Vidu,la bovino aŭdigis grandan bruon per siaj hufoj sur la gruza pado,kio vekis multan suspekton en la noktprofundo. Nur post rigora enketado en la Ĉefsidejo oni eltrovis,ke la kaptito estas la provizora prezidanto de l' Kamparana Sindikato en tiu ĉi vilaĝo. Li estas Onklo Pan,kompreneble ..."

"Be quiet,ma'am. I'll come to him soon. It won't take a minute," Lao Liu reassured her,still as quiet and unperturbed as a story-teller. And he went on with his preamble: "Look here,this is the point that made me worry,as soon as I heard from O Ran the news about Uncle Pan's departure. Suppose he came across one of the patrols and was mistaken for a saboteur or a spy ..."
"What?" my mother cried out.
"Do be quiet,please. I am coming to the subject," Lao Liu said. "So I tried my best to find out if anything had happened to him. You see,I am in no way less concerned about him than you. My relations with O Ran has brought me much closer to this house. He is no less my uncle than O Ran's. I inquired of my friends at the H.Q. of the Peasants' Volunteer Brigade in the County City about him. They told me that they had captured an old peasant with a cow one night recently. The patrols nearly killed him,mistaking him for a thief or a spy for Chumin. He had very bad luck,ma'am. He might have got through the district successfully had it not been for the cow. You see,the cow made a terrific noise with its hoofs on the gravel path,which provoked great suspicion in the dead of night. It was only after severe interrogation at the H.Q. that they found out that the captive was the provisional chairman of the Peasants' Union in this village. It is Uncle Pan,of course ..."
