12.4 "Ĉu oni akuzas lin esti spiono aŭ sabotisto?" En la voĉo de mia patrino estis timego kaj ŝiaj okuloj maltrankvile plilarĝiĝis.
"Tion oni faras! Sed mi sendis leteron tuj,kiam mi aŭdis pri tio. Mi garantiis en mia rolo kiel Vickomisaro de Propagando en tiu ĉi distrikto,ke Onklo Pan estas bona kaj honesta kamparano en la vilaĝo. Mi klarigis ankaŭ,ke li lastatempe hejmsopiris sian naskiĝlokon kaj deziras reiri kiel eble plej baldaŭ,kaj pro tio li ekvojaĝis antaŭ la tagiĝo."
"Ĉu oni kredas tion,kion vi diris?"
"Kompreneble jes! Ĉu vi supozas,ke ili kredu la parolon de la reakciuloj?"
"Tre bone,Laŭ Liŭ. Mi estas profunde dankema. Kiam laŭ via opinio oni resendos Onklon Pan en la vilaĝon?"
"Tio estas ioma problemo,s'rino." La maldensaj brovoj de la eksrakontisto kunpremiĝis. "La situacio de Onklo Pan estas alia. Li estas provizora prezidanto de l' Kamparana Sindikato en la vilaĝo,kiel vi scias. Estas kontraŭe al la revoluciaj principoj nuntempe,dizerti postenon kaj iri al alia distrikto,ĉu aŭ ne oni hejmsopiras. Tio montras mankon de kompreno pri revolucia teorio liaflanke. Do oni reformos lin. Oni sendis lin en reformejon,kiu estas nove starigita aparte por politikaj dizertuloj."
"Ho,ho ..." mia patrino ekdiris lace. Ŝiaj timplenaj okuloj iĝis svagaj kaj nebulecaj. Ŝi estis konfuzita de tio,kion diris Laŭ Liŭ. "Sed Onklo Pan neniam estis politikema,des malpli revolucia," ŝi murmuris kvazaŭ al si mem,rigardante senvide la plankon. Poste ŝi plilaŭtigis sian voĉon: "Kio pri la bovino? Ĉu li povos kunpreni la bovinon en la reformejon? Komprenu,li estas maljunulo soleca..."

"Do they accuse him of being a spy or saboteur?" There was alarm in my mother's voice and her eyes were wildly enlarged.
"They did! But I sent them a letter as soon as I heard about it. I guaranteed to them in my capacity as the Assistant Commissar of Publicity for this district that Uncle Pan was a good and honest peasant in the village. I also explained that Uncle Pan had lately grown homesick about his native place and wanted to get back as soon as possible and that was why he started the journey before dawn."
"Do they believe what you said?"
"Of course they do! Do you expect them to believe in the words of the reactionaries?"
"Very good,Lao Liu. I'm most grateful. When do you think they will send Uncle Pan back to the village?"
"That is rather a problem,ma'am." The sparse brows of the ex-story-teller knitted. "Uncle Pan's position is different. He is the provisional chairman of the Peasant Union in the village,as you know. It is against revolutionary principle at the present moment to desert one's post for another district,homesick or not. It shows lack of understanding of revolutionary theory on his part. So he is to be reformed. They have put him in a reformatory,which is newly set up specially for political deserters."
"Oh,oh..." my mother exclaimed with weariness. Her alarmed eyes became vague and misty. She was confused by what Lao Liu said. "But Uncle Pan has never been political,still less is he revolutionary," she murmured as though to herself,staring blankly at the floor. Then she raised her voice: "How about the cow? Can he take the cow with him to the reformatory? You see,he's a lonely old man..."
