12.5 "Kiel rilatas la bovino al politiko?" nia rakontisto demandis surprizite. "Ŝin oni konfiskis por la publika utilo. Tio estis jam misa gesto far Onklo Pan,kunpreni tiun pecon da privata proprietaĵo kun si dum la hejmeniro."
"Vi ne komprenas,Laŭ Liŭ,kion signifas en lia vivo la bovino." Mia patrino provis klarigi al la komisaro,sed baldaŭ ŝia voĉo mallaŭtiĝis kun suspiro. "Neniu povas kompreni tion. Sed volu diri al mi,kiam oni permesos,ke li revenu hejmen?"
"Kiam li estos komplete reformita kaj aktiva revoluciulo."
"Aktiva revoluciulo? Ĉu li kapablos esti?" La scivolema voĉo de mia patrino iĝis murmuro: "Ha,se li vere fariĝos tia,li neniam revenos hejmen."
"Mi timas tion. Li poste dediĉus sian vivon al revolucio. Aliflanke,se malsukcesos reformi sin li apenaŭ povos forlasi la instituton."
"Komprenite ..." mia patrino murmuris al si,subenrigardante penseme. Momenton poste ŝi levis la okulojn kaj demandis kviete, "Ĉu vi ne povas uzi vian influon por liberigi lin el la reformado? Vidu,reformejo celas esti loko por junuloj,kiom mi komprenas la aferon. Sed li estas tiel senespere maljuna ..."
"Mi ne povas,s'rino. Tio estas afero de revolucia disciplino. Mi simple ne povas!" Laŭ Liŭ diris,kuntirante la brovojn,kaj iom senpacienciĝis. Poste,elrigardante tra la fenestro,li subite ektremis kaj ekkriis,"Ho ve! Mi intencis resti nur kelkajn minutojn. Jen mi pasigis duonon de la tago. Mi devas rapidi!" Poste,turninte sin al mia patrino,li aldonis per mallaŭta voĉo: "S'rino,mi volas peti vian permeson pri io."
"Kian permeson vi devas peti de mi,Laŭ Liŭ?" mia patrino diris,surprizite. "Vi estas nun revolucia mandareno. Vi rajtas fari,kion vi volas."
"Ne,s'rino. Mi ne rajtas agi blinde. Revoluciaj oficialuloj malsamas la eksmodajn burokratulojn. Ni devas agi laŭ ordo kaj disciplino."
"Pri kio temas,do?"

"What has the cow to do with politics?" our story-teller asked with surprise. "She was confiscated for public use. It is already a bad gesture for Uncle Pan to take this piece of private property with him on his way home."
"You don't understand,Lao Liu,what the cow means to his life." My mother tried to explain to the commissar,but her voice soon dropped with a sigh. "No one can understand that. But do tell me,when will they let him go back home?"
"When he is thoroughly reformed and an active revolutionary."
"Active revolutionary! Can he be one?" My mother's inquisitive voice lapsed into a murmur: "Ah,if he really becomes one then he will never come back home."
"I am afraid so. He would then devote his life to revolution. On the other hand,if he fails to reform himself he will hardly be able to get out of the institute."
"I see ..." my mother mumbled to herself,looking down thoughtfully. After a moment she lifted her eyes and asked quietly,"Can't you use your influence to get him exempted from the reformation? You see,a reformatory is supposed to be a place for young people,as far as I can gather. But he is so hopelessly old ..."
"I can't,ma'am. It is a matter of revolutionary discipline. I simply can't!" Lao Liu said,frowning,and became rather impatient. Then,looking out through the window,he suddenly shuddered and exclaimed,"Oh,my! I meant to come here for a few minutes. Now I've spent half a day. I must hurry up!" Then turning to my mother he added in a low voice: "Ma'am,I want to ask your permission for something."
"What permission do you have to ask from me,Lao Liu?" my mother said,surprised. "You're now a revolutionary official. You can do anything you like."
"No,ma'am. I can't do things blindly. Revolutionary officials are different from the old-fashioned bureaucrats. We must do things according to order and discipline."
"What is it,then?"
