12.6 Laŭ Liŭ fiksrigardis la sensentigitan vizaĝon de mia patrino dum kelka tempo. Poste li diris trankvile,"Mi volas forpreni Alan-on kun mi."
"Forpreni?" mia patrino eksaltis,fiksante Laŭ Liŭ-on per siaj dilatintaj okuloj,kvazaŭ li estus fremdulo. "Kion vi celas? Mi ne komprenas vin,Laŭ Liŭ."
"Aŭskultu! Ĉu Min kaj Ŭang la Leono estas nomitaj kiel konsilantoj al granda ekspedicia armeo,kiel mi jam sciigis vin. Ili venos ĉi tiun distrikton en kiu ajn momento. Ĉar tiu ĉi loko estas strategie nedefendebla,al ni estas ordonite retreti al la granda montaro okcidente kaj konstrui tie revolucian bazon ĉirkaŭ la gubernia urbo. Vidu,tio estos longedaŭra luktado. Mi eble ne povos reveni en la proksima estonteco. Do mi deziras kunpreni Alan-on: mi edzinigos ŝin laŭeble baldaŭ. S'rino,mi eble devos foriri al la montaro iam ajn dum la venontaj tri tagoj,ĉar niaj informistoj raportas,ke la soldatoj de Ĉu Min estas jam moviĝantaj."
"Ĉu vi certas?" mia patrino diris dubeme. Sed ŝia vizaĝo jam paliĝis.
"Mi tute certas."
"Do eĉ se Onklo Pan iĝas tute reformita,li ne povos reveni al ni eĉ vizite ..."
"Tio dependas. Sed volu diri al mi,ĉu mi rajtas forpreni Alan-on kun mi?"
"Nu," mia patrino paŭzis tuj post la ekparolo. Ŝi mallevis la kapon penseme. Ŝiajn okulojn malklarigis larmovualo,kiu brile respegulis la malhelan lumon de la fenestro. Ŝi ne kapablis paroli.
"Volu diri al mi,s'rino. Mi deziras vian parolon," Laŭ Liŭ insistis kaj komencis volvi la afiŝojn,kiuj kuŝis sur la tablo.

Lao Liu gazed at my mother's stunned face for a while. Then he said calmly,"I want to take O Ran away with me."
"Away?" My mother started,fixing her dilated eyes at Lao Liu as though he were a stranger. "What do you mean? I don't understand you,Lao Liu."
"Listen! Chumin and Wang the Lion have been made advisers to a big expeditionary army,as I have told you. They are coming to this district at any time. As this place is strategically indefensible we have been instructed to withdraw to the high mountains in the west and build up a revolutionary base there around the County City. You see,it is going to be a long-term struggle. I may not be able to come back in the near future. So I want to take O Ran with me: I shall marry her as soon as possible. Ma'am,I may have to leave for the mountains any time within these three days,because our intelligence men have reported that Chumin's troops are already on the move."
"Are you sure?" my mother said doubtfully. But her face had already turned pale.
"I'm quite sure."
"Then even if Uncle Pan becomes thoroughly reformed,he wouldn't be able to return to us even for a visit..."
"It all depends. But do tell me,can I take O Ran away with me?"
"Well," my mother paused as soon as she began. She lowered her head thoughtfully. Her eyes were blurred by a veil of tears that reflected glaringly the dull light from the window. She could not speak.
"Do tell me,ma'am. I want a word from you," Lao Liu pressed and began to roll up the posters that lay on the table.
