La Imperiestro mem eble ŝanĝus sian intencon pro ia apelacio. Sed ĉu vi supozas,ke tiaj homoj,kiaj Ĉu Min kaj Ŭang la Leono volus ŝanĝi la decidon? Ili estas homoj impulsiĝemaj,s'rino. Ili ne devias duoncolon eĉ pri tiaj bagateloj,kiaj terlupago. Mi konas ilin bone,kvankam mi neniam kultivis ilian teron."
"Komprenite," mia patrino diris al si penseme. "Eble vi pravas. Sed ion ni devas fari por nia kompatinda Onklo Pejfu."
"Certe! Mi pripensas daŭrigon de lia lernejo post lia morto,kio estis lia dumviva kariero. Ĉu vi opinias,ke mi estus bona instruisto? Mi ne tre emas instrui,sed pro mia longedaŭra amikeco al Pejfu mi devas ion fari por daŭrigi lian karieron. Cetere,s'rino,se iu proponos tiun ideon,ĉu vi subtenos min? ..."
"Kiel vi povas pensi pri tiaj aferoj,Benĉin?" mia patrino diris,deprimita kaj trista. "Li ankoraŭ ne mortis. Ĉu vi ne estas lia amiko?"

"Absolutely nothing," said Benchin firmly,putting on a serious face. "The proclamation was issued by the Court of the new Emperor through the office of Chumin and Wang the Lion. The Emperor himself may change his mind by some sort of appeal. But do you think people like Chumin and Wang the lion would alter the decision? They are men of iron will,ma'am. They do not swerve half an inch even over such small matters as land rent. I know them well,although I have never farmed their land."
"I see," my mother said to herself thoughtfully. "You are perhaps right. But we must do something for our poor Uncle Peifu."
"Certainly! I'm thinking of continuing his school after his death,which has been his life-long career. Do you think I'd make a good schoolmaster? I'm not particularly keen on teaching,but in view of my long standing friendship with Peifu I must do something to continue his career. By the way,ma'am,if somebody suggests the idea,would you support me? ..."
"How can you think of such things,Benchin!" my mother said,depressed and sad. "He hasn't died yet. Aren't you his friend?"
