Aju,aju,aj-aju,aj-aju,aj-jo-ho-ho...
kiu ĉiam finiĝis per la sama rekantaĵo:
Ĉi flava ter' printempe donis rizon,
Kaj en aŭtun' sojfabojnkaj batatojn.
Kanto stulta ĝi estis,sed al la homoj plaĉis kanti ĝin dumlabore.Kiam ili komencis,ĝi elvokis el diversaj direktoj multnombrajn eĥojn.Komence tiuj travibris malharmonie la aeron,sed baldaŭ kunfluiĝis je grandioza ĥoro.Kaj poste ununura eĥo aŭdiĝis.Pli kaj pli laŭtiĝadis la ĥoro,ĝis fine ĝi subite ĉesis,posttrenante tra la aero feblan noton,kiu sonis lulkante.Tiu iom post iom formortadis,kvazaŭ endormiĝus la infaneto.Signifis la trankvilo tagmezon aŭ proksiman sunsubiron.
When it was fine there was always a song in the valley,whether it was early morning or afternoon.Even when there was no one singing,the song seemed to be still lingering there,unwilling to go.The undulating moutains walled in the air which carried the song,and it could not go.It was a melody beginning with:
Aiyu,aiyu,ai-aiyu,ai-ai-yu,ai-yo-ho-ho...
and ending always with the same refrain:
This yellow earth gave us rice in spring,
And in autumn,soya beans and sweet potato.
It was a silly song,but people liked to sing it while working.When they started,it provoked a multitude of echoes from various directions.They vibrated in the air discordantly at first,but soon became confluent into a huage chorus.And then there was only one echo.The chorus grew bigger and bigger in volume until at last it came to a sudden stop,traling in the air a feeble note,which sounded like a lullaby.It died out gradually as though the baby were falling asleep.The transquillity meant middy or that the sun was about to set.
hway, extending along the stream into the distant horizon in one direction,and to thick woods in the other.The peasants walked with leisurely steps,with hoes and spades on their shoulders,towards the dense cluster of trees.The first disappeared into them,then a second,then a third...and finally the last.They moved like a long snake that wriggles into a forest leaving no trace behind,or like a streak of evening smoke that vanishes the moment it touches the dark foliage of the ancient plants.
