It was a meaningless unison struck up by the coolies on the sandy beach round the bend over there.I did not know why they should hum it.It sounded so silly.They were carrying heavy loads on their backs,their heads bent.As they plodded along the road leading to the ancient walled city up on the flat ground beneath a semi-circle of hills,they chanted ceaselessly these monosyllabic sounds as though to accentuate their weighty steps.The city,apart from numerous shops and houses,had a big Buddhist temple at its east end with a large aquare before it,to accommodate worshippers on festival days.The shops bought all sorts of things from 'The Big City,' about a hundred miles down the river,and sold them to the villagers.The commodities were carried up on bamboo rafts.
