11.13 Onklon Pan tute konsternis tiu abrupta demando,kaj lia mano senmovis sur la bovinflanko. Estis strange,ke tiu homo konas Maŭmaŭ-on,kiu neniam havis amikon ekster la vilaĝo. Kaj plej strange estis,ke la voĉo de tiu viro ŝajnis tiel konata. Sed Onklo Pan ne certis,kie li jam aŭdis ĝin. Li fiksrigardis tiun iom etan viron kun la pistolo,kiel idioto.
"Kial vi rigardadas min,olda Onklo?" la viro demandis. "Ĉu vi ne rekonas min? Via bela bovino devus memorigi vin pri mi."
Onklo Pan trarigardis la vizaĝon de tiu viro. Subite li saltleviĝis kaj kriis surprizite: "Jen! Ĉu vi estas la falsa virino? Ĉerte mi memoras vin!"
"Falsa virino mi ne estas--la transvestiĝo estis nur rimedo dum la periodo de blanka teroro," la viro diris laŭte,kun pluraj emfazoj en la frazo. "Mi estas reala viro."
"Mi petas pardonon!" Onklo Pan pardonpetis plurfoje. "Vi revenigis al la vilaĝo Maŭmaŭ-on en la mateno de la dua tago de l' Revolucia Dinastio. Mi memoras! Mi memoras!"
"Bone! Diru al mi,kie loĝas Maŭmaŭ."

Uncle Pan was completely taken aback by this abrupt question,his hand immobile on the flank of the cow. It was strange that this man should know Mao Mao,who never had a friend outside the village. And the queerest of all was that this man's voice sounded so familiar. But Uncle Pan was not sure where he had heard it. He stared at this smallish man with the pistol,like a fool.
"What are you looking at me for,old Uncle?" the man asked. "Don't you recognise me? Your beautiful cow ought to remind you of me."
Uncle Pan perused this man's face. Suddenly he jumped up and shouted with surprise: "Say! Are you the false woman? Certainly I remember you!"
"I am not a false woman--the disguise was only an expedient during the period of white terror," the man said loudly with several stresses in his sentence. "I'm a real man."
"I beg your pardon!" Uncle Pan apologised repeatedly.
"You are a revolutionary officer. I remember. I remember. You brought Mao Mao back to the village early in the morning on the second day of the Revolutionary Dynasty. I remember! I remember!"
"Good! Tell me where Mao Mao lives."
