11.21 "Jes,mi iros,mi iros," Onklo Pan diris kiel eble plej rapide,ne refutante eĉ unu el ŝiaj vortoj. "Sed vi devas ripozigi vin. Vi ne devas domaĝi al la bebo. Mi nepre faros mian plejeblon pledi por li!"
Li forlasis ŝin kun suspiro de malŝarĝiĝo.
Tranĉinte dutagan porcion da sojfaba kuko por nia juna bovino,Onklo Pan ekiris al la gubernia urbo posttagmeze. La tago estis kadukiĝa. La suno jam kliniĝis okcidenten. Mia patrino konsilis,ke li komencu la vojaĝon en la posta mateno,sed Onklo Pan insistis,ke li devas iri tuj. Li diris,ke post la arestiĝo de Maŭmaŭ li komencis imagi aferojn,ne nur pri li,sed ankaŭ pri lia edzino kaj la bebo en ŝia utero;kaj ke tiuj imagoj dolorigis lian maljunan koron,kvankam li ne sciis la kialon. Do li foriris,kunprenante ses panbulkojn kiel sian nutraĵon.
Li ne revenis la duan tagon. La trian tagon li ankoraŭ ne reaperis. Korvino komencis senpacienciĝi kaj vizitis nin ĉiun trian horon. Ŝi rakontis kun gestoj kaj suspiroj,dum larmoj senĉese fluadis el ŝiaj ŝvelintaj okuloj,ke ŝi sonĝis teruraĵojn pri Maŭmaŭ,sonĝis ke Maŭmaŭ eskapis survoje kaj trovis ŝirmon ĉe juna vidvino loĝanta en la montetoj;ke la animon de Maŭmaŭ tuj kaptis tiu sorĉistino kaj li ne volis reveni al la vilaĝo;ke tiaj aferoj estis por Maŭmaŭ tute eblaj,kiu facile falus en la manojn de virinoj,precipe junaj vidvinoj,ĝuste kiel muso en la kroĉon de kato;kaj ke Maŭmaŭ forgesos ŝin tuj,kiam li estos ekster ŝia regkapablo.

"Yes,I will,I will," Uncle Pan said as fast as he could manage,without refuting a single word she uttered. "But you must rest yourself. You must not hurt the baby. I certainly will do my best to speak for him!"
He left her with a sigh of relief.
Ater having cut two days' ration of soya bean cake for our young cow,Uncle Pan left for the County City in the afternoon. The day was well spent. The sun had already tilted towards the west. My mother advised him to start the journey the next morning,but Uncle Pan insisted that he must go right away. He said that after Mao Mao had been arrested he began to imagine things,not only about him,but also about his wife and the baby in her womb;and that these imaginations made his old heart painful,without knowing why. So he left,taking with him half a dozen rolls of bread as his food.
He did not come back the second day. On the third day he still did not turn up. She-crow began to get impatient,and called on us once in every three hours. She related with gestures and sighs,while tears streamed incessantly out of her swollen eyes,that she had dreamed terrible things about Mao Mao,had dreamed that Mao Mao had escaped on the way and was sheltered by a young widow living in the hills;that Mao Mao's soul was immediately captured by this witch and did not want to come back to the village again;that such things were quite possible for Mao Mao who could easily fall into the hands of women,especially young widows,just like a mouse into the clutch of a cat;and that Mao Mao would forget her once he was out of her control.
