11.26 Unuvorte,s'rino,oni rifuzis doni ĉerkon aŭ sendi homojn por enterigi Maŭmaŭ-on. Do mi devis mem entombigi lin sen ĉerko. Lia kadavro estis terure peza. Mi ne povis kredi,ke li estis unu el niaj vilaĝanoj,unu el niaj frataj terkulturistoj. Sed ĉion rakontis liaj malnetaj vestaĵoj. Kompatinda Maŭmaŭ neniam portis novan vestaĵon,de kiam li edziĝis al Korvino,kiel vi scias,s'rino."
Mia patrino restadis silenta,trarigardante la fenestron,kie pluraj paseroj ĉirpis kaj luktis kiel kutime pri ia nutraĵo. Onklo Pan metis sian kapon inter la manojn kaj ekgratis furioze per la fingroj. Alan tiumomente elvenis el la kuirejo,tenante per la manoj bovlon da varmegaj nudeloj,de kiu la vaporo spiralis en la aeron kiel drako. Onklo Pan diris per malalta tamen peza voĉo,"Dankon,Alan,sed mi nenion volas manĝi. Mi ne malsatas."
"Ja manĝu iom,Onklo. Mi kuiris tion laŭ mia plejeblo," Alan diris,kiel plenkreskulo. Ŝi pasigis lastatempe la pliparton de sia tempo kun Laŭ Liŭ,kaj lernis konduti en la domo kiel gasto prefere ol domano. Vidante la nerespondemon de Onklo Pan,ŝi aldonis,"Bonvolu ja manĝi iom,Onklo. Mi eble ne plu havos okazon kuiri por vi,kiel vi ankaŭ eble ne plu havos okazon gustumi mian kuiraĵon. La aferoj en la mondo estas ŝanĝiĝantaj tiel terure rapide!" kaj ŝi surtabligis la pladon kaj poste remalaperis en la kuirejon.

In a word,ma'am,they could not give a coffin,nor send people to bury Mao Mao. So I had to bury him myself without a coffin. His corpse was terribly heavy. I could not possibly believe that he was one of our villagers,one of my fellow farmhands. But his shabby clothes told everything. My mother remained silent,staring out through the window,where a few sparrows were chirping and fighting over some food,as usual. Uncle Pan put his head in both his hands and scratched his scalp madly with his fingers. O Ran at that moment emerged from the kitchen holding in her hands a bowl of hot noodles,the steam from which spiralled up into the air like a dragon. Uncle Pan said in a low,but heavy,voice,"Thank you,O Ran,but I don't want to eat anything. I am not hungry."
"Do eat some,Uncle. I did my best to cook it," O Ran said,like a grown-up woman. She had been of late most of the time with Lao Liu,and had learned to behave like a guest in the house rather than a member. Seeing that Uncle Pan was irresponsive,she added,"Do please eat some,Uncle. I may no longer have an opportunity to cook for you,just as you may no more have a chance to taste my cooking. Things in the world are changing so terribly fast!" And she put the dish on the table and then vanished into the kitchen again.
