11.30 "Sonas agrable,s'rino.

"Sounds very nice,ma'am. But tell me:are you sure that you'll give me the cow?"
"Why,she is your cow. She has always been your cow. You saw her come into the world, nursed her and have brought her up to her present shape. She is yours! She is absolutely yours!"
"Do you really mean it?"
"Of course I mean it. To whom does she belong do you think? When you were away, she did not even sniff at the food I gave her. She recognises only one person in the world, that is you."
"Thank you,ma'am. I'll keep the cow. She will be the companion to my old age. She will remind me of the fertile earth I've worked on,of the green sea of rice I have planted,of the golden waves of wheat I have sown. Ma'am,I like to think of such things. They make my old heart warm and smile..." Suddenly his voice snapped. Nameless tears welled out from his delirious,dark-ringed old eyes.
"Oh,Uncle Pan! Uncle Pan! You are too tired. You need some rest." My mother dashed to him and helped him to stand up from the low bench he was sitting on. Then she signed to me to come near. We supported him into his room and laid him in his bed. Uncle Pan was as weak as an old invalid. But he was sobbing fitfully like a child.
After we came out to the living-room my mother murmured, with feeling and sadness,"He is old. I've never thought of that. Time does fly very fast! He is old. We are all getting old!"
