11.31 La postan tagon Onklo Pan ne aperis por matenmanĝo. Ni supozis lin tro laca por leviĝi. Mia patrino avertis Alan-on,ke ŝi ne veku lin kaj perturbu lin ĉar li bezonis pli da dormo. Sed kiam la suno moviĝis preskaŭ ĝis la zenito,Onklo Pan ankoraŭ ne aperis en la domo. Mia patrino komencis scivoliĝi. Do ni iris al lia ĉambro. Je nia surprizo,li tie ne estis. Ni pensis,ke eble li estas en la apuda ĉambro,manĝiganta la bovinon. Do ni iris al la bovinejo. Ankaŭ ĝi estis malplena. La bovino estis for.
Mia patrino staris meze de la ĉambro,klopodante elpensi,kio okazis. "Ĉu eble li kondukis la bovinon al la paŝtejo? Ne! En la valo estas neniom da herbo ĉisezone."
Heziteme mia patrino reeniris la ĉambron de Onklo Pan. Ŝi flamigis alumeton kaj fajrigis la olean lampon sur la tablo apud la lito,ĉar estis malhele en la ĉambro. Tie,sur la tablo,ni trovis strion da papero surskribitan per kelkaj malnetaj ideogramoj. Ili estis laŭ la manskribo de Onklo Pan,tre infanaspektaj kaj senstilaj. Kaj ĉar Onklo Pan neniam lernis sufiĉe multajn vortojn por sin esprimi,tial la frazoj ankaŭ legiĝis tre krude.

S'rino,--Mi tute ne povis dormi la pasintan nokton. Ĉiam denove aperis antaŭ miajn okulojn Maŭmaŭ kaj la lamentado de lia edzino sonoradis en miaj oreloj. Mi ne fartas bone,s'rino. Mi pensas pri mia naskiĝloko en la Nordo,pri miaj gepatroj kaj ties tomboj,kiuj certe restis neprizorgitaj de kiam mi estis for. Mi decidis komenci morgaŭ la hejmenvojaĝon antaŭ la tagiĝo kun mia filino la bovino,kiun vi promesis doni al mi. Mi bedaŭras,s'rino. Mi kore bedaŭras. Mi deziras al vi bonan sanon,ke Junĉi ricevos la grandan dividendon kaj viaj filoj fariĝos gravuloj. Kaj mian amon al Alan,s-rino.

The next day Uncle Pan did not turn up for breakfast. We thought he was too tired to get up. My mother warned O Ran not to wake up and disturb him as he needed more sleep. And as Uncle Pan had not learned enough words to express himself,the sentences read also very clumsily.
Ma'am,--I could not sleep a wink last night. Mao Mao kept on appearing before my eyes and his wife's lamentation ringing in my ears. I don't feel well,ma'am. I think of my birthplace in the North,of my parents and their graves which must have remained unrepaired since I was away. I have decided to start the journey back home before dawn with my daughter the cow,whom you promised to give me. I am sorry,ma'am. I am sorry at heart.
