12.2 "Onklo Pan!" mia patrino kriis kun paliĝanta vizaĝo. "Kian novaĵon? Ĉu bonan aŭ malbonan?"
"Ne ekscitiĝu,s'rino. Ne temas pri tute malbona novaĵo..."
"Ĉu li revenos?" mia patrino interrompis lin.
"Aŭskultu,s'rino. Alan informis min,ke li malaperis dumnokte kun sia bovino.

"Uncle Pan!" my mother shouted, her face went pale. "What news? Good or bad?
"Don't get excited,ma'am. It's not altogether bad news ..."
"Is he coming back?" my mother interrupted him.
"Listen,ma'am. I've heard from O Ran that he dissppeared at night with his cow. As a matter of fact I have been worried about him. He didn't know,ma'am,how serious the present political situation is. The reactionaries in the Provincial Capital have started an offensive against us,and, supplied with modern arms from foreign countries, have defeated the revolutionary army at several strategic places. Chumin and his steward Wang the Lion who escaped have been made advisers to an expeditionary force, which is to come to this district soon ..."
"But how about Uncle Pan? Tell me about Uncle Pan only!" my mother asked anxiously, interrupting him again. "I don't want to hear about Chumin and his army."
"Listen quietly,ma'am. I'll come to that," Lao Liu said in an unperturbed voice,as quiet as when he was telling a story. "In the face of this extraordinary white terror," Lao Liu stressed this new terminology with a cough and then went on "(you know what this means,of course),we have to be on the alert. So the H.Q. of the newly reorganised Peasants' Volunteer Brigade decided to post patrols secretly on vaious roads in the district at night, just in case the reactionaries try to sabotage and spies to sneak in ..."
"You mean Uncle Pan ...?" my mother interrupted him again, and her face became livid.
