12.8 Laŭ Liŭ rektigis sin kaj ridetegis. Mi atendis,ke Alan ekploros pri la foriro en nekonatan regionon kaj pro sentimento rilate tiun ĉi domon,en kiu ŝi edukiĝis. Male,ŝi aspektis surprize ĝoja,ekbrilis ŝia senesprima variolumita vizaĝo,kaj rideto ŝvebis ĉirkaŭ ŝiaj lipoj kaj brovoj. Ŝi estis ne nur ĝoja,sed ankaŭ fiera. Mia patrino iomete levis sian kapon kaj ekgvadis ŝin,sed tuj remallevis siajn okulojn.
Laŭ Liŭ remetis subbraken la aron da afiŝoj kaj diris al mia patrino,"Dankon,s'rino,pro via patrineca prizorgado de Alan dum tiom da jaroj." Poste,sin turninte al Alan,li daŭrigis,"Mi baldaŭ revidos vin,Alan. Nun mi devas iri. Estu preta,komenci la vojaĝon kiam ajn." Kaj li eliris tiel rapide,kiel li envenis.
Mia patrino premis sian kapon al seĝodorso. Komencis ondiĝi ŝia brusto kaj larmoj hele brilis en ŝiaj okuloj. Sed ŝi sukcesis subpremi ilin. Tia ŝi ĉiam estis: ŝi neniam efektive ploris.

Lao Liu straightened up and was all smiles. I expected O Ran would burst out into tears over the departure to an unknown region and for sentimentality about this house in which she was brought up. On the contrary she looked surprisingly happy,her sullen,pockmarked face brightened up,and a smile was hovering about her lips and eyebrows. She was not only cheerful,but proud. My mother raised her head slightly and stole a glance at her,but immediately lowered her eyes again.
Lao Liu put the bundle of posters under his arms again and said to my mother,"Thank you,ma'am,for your motherly care for O Ran all these years." Then,turning to O Ran,he went on,"I will be seeing you soon,O Ran. I must go now. Be ready to start the journey at any time." And he went out as hurriedly as he had come in.
My mother threw her head on the back of her chair. Her chest began to heave up and down and the tears shone brightly in her eyes. But she succeeded in restraining them. She was always like that: she never actually wept.
