12.13 Poste li fermis siajn okulojn,suspiris malŝarĝiĝe kaj daŭrigis per revema tono: "Ho,mi volas,ke la nova Imperiestro pli atentus edukadon kaj la spiritan vivon de la popolo!" Poste li malfermis siajn okulojn kaj fiksrigardis mian patrinon kaj demandis,"Ĉu vi scias,s'rino,kio kaŭzis la malsukceson de la revoluciaj banditoj?" Ne atendinte respondon,li mem respondis tre emfaze: "Malestimo al la taoisma pastro! Pro tio ili ne povas elteni. Sed aliflanke,se la pastro senvalorigas sin per drivado sur la tajdo de bandita ribelo,kiel faris la kompatinda maljuna instruisto Onklo Pejfu,tiam..." Li ne trovis ĝustajn vortojn por kompletigi la aserton,sed ripete suspiris. Post kelka tempo li denove laŭtigis la voĉon,kaj plene priskribis la kondamnon de Onklo Pejfu kiel "revolucia bandito" far la nova registaro.
"Ĉu vi certas,ke Onklo Pejfu estas ekzekutota?" mia patrino demandis,dum komencis tremadi ŝiaj manoj.
"Ĉu iam mi diris al vi malveron?" nia pastro rebatis. Poste li komencis ĵuri je la nomoj de fantomoj,sanktaj kaj malsanktaj.
"Bone,bone,mi kredas vin," mia patrino diris ripete,panike. "Sed kion ni estas farontaj do por tiu nia malnova amiko? Ni ĉiuj scias,ke la kompatinda instruisto estas senkulpulo."

Then he closed his eyes,heaved a sigh of relief and went on in dreamy tones: "Oh,I wish the new Emperor would pay a little more attention to education and the spiritual life of the people!" Then he opened his eyes and stared at my mother and asked,"You know,ma'am,what caused the downfall of the revolutionary bandits?" Without waiting for a reply he made the answer himself with great emphasis: "The contempt of the Taoist priest! That is why they cannot hold on. But on the other hand if the priest does not value himself by drifting into the tide of bandit uprising as the pitiable old schoolmaster Uncle Peifu did,then..." He could not find proper words to finish the statement,but sighed repeatedly. After a while he raised his voice again,and gave a full description of Uncle Peifu's condemnation as a revolutionary bandit by the new government.
"Are you sure that Uncle Peifu is going to be executed?" my mother asked,as her hands started to tremble.
"Have I ever told a lie?" our priest retorted. Then he started to swear by the names of ghosts,holy and unholy.
"All right,all right,I believe you," my mother said repeatedly,panic-stricken. "But what are we going to do for this old friend of ours,then? We all know that the poor schoolmaster is an innocent man."
