"Kio estas al vi?" mia patrino demandis,enrigardante liajn delirajn okulojn.
La pastro daŭre murmuradis, "Onklo Pejfu,mi ne akceptos vian postenon. Estu certe,ke mi tion ne faros ... Mi deziras resti ĉe mia malnova laboro:predikado. Onklo Pejfu,mi ne ..."
"Kio estas al vi,Benĉin?" mia patrino denove demandis.
La pastro daŭre murmuradis,kvazaŭ li aŭdus nenion: "Onklo Pejfu,mi ĵuras,ke mi ne deziras esti instruisto ... Mi ĵuras je la nomoj de la sanktaj fantomoj ..."
"Ĉu vi frenezas,Benĉin?" mia patrino kriis en liajn orelojn. "Pri kio vi parolas?" Kaj ŝi komencis skui lian ŝultron. "Vi devas esti freneza."
"Mi ne frenezas,s'rino. Ili frenezas. Ili mortigis Onklon Pejfu per glavo hodiaŭ frumatene,s'rino,per longa glavo,du futojn longa; ne,tri futojn longa; ne,cent futojn longa. Ili tranĉis trifoje la kolon de Onklo Pejfu,sed lia kapo ne disiĝis: tro osteca,s'rino. Ĝi estas maljuna kolo; la ostoj estis tro malfacile tranĉeblaj. Kaj elsputis la sango,cent futojn alten,kiel fontano. Estas strange,s'rino,ke maljuna ostulo enhavu tiom da sango. Um...da...da...da...um...haj..."

The priest went on murmuring as though he had heard nothing: "Uncle Peifu,I swear I don't want to be a schoolmaster ... I swear by the name of the sainted ghosts ..."
"Are you mad,Benchin?" my mother shouted in his ears. "What are you talking about?" And she began to shake him by the shoulder. "You must be mad."
"I'm not mad,ma'am. They are mad. They killed Uncle Peifu with a sword early this morning,ma'am,a long sword,two feet long; no,three feet long; no,a hundred feet long. They cut Uncle Peifu's neck three times,but his head did not come off: too bony,ma'am. It's an old neck;the bones were too hard to cut. And the blood spurted out,a hundred feet high,like a fountain. It's strange,ma'am,the old bony fellow should have had so much blood. Um...da...da...da...um...hai..."
