11.14 Onklo Pan subite paliĝis pro la vortoj,sentante ion misan pri la peto. Li hezitis,kaj komencis grati sian kalvan verton. "Nu,nu,mi...mi..."
"Diru al mi tuj,mi petas! Vi devas scii,kie estas la dometo de Maŭmaŭ. Ĉu vi ne memoras tiun matenon,kiam mi transdonis al vi Maŭmaŭ-on? Vi respondecas pri li. Ni volas lin nun!" La voĉo de la viro estis minacema.
"Nu...nu..." Onklo Pan balbutis,okulumante la pistolon,sur kiun la viro metis sian manon. "Nu,mi ne scias,ĉu aŭ ne li estas hejme."
"Konduku nin ĝis lia loko,mi vin petas!" la viro kriis.
"Nu bone,do," Onklo Pan murmuris,preskaŭ ekplorante.
Nevolonte li moviĝis en la direkton de l' dometo de Maŭmaŭ. La strangaj vizitantoj pezpaŝe sekvis lin.
Maŭmaŭ estis hejme,vigle preparante manĝaĵon por sia edzino en la kuirejo. Dumlonge li ne elvenis,ĉar li devis atendi ĝis la manĝo estis bone kuirita. Korvino estis graveda jam de pluraj monatoj kaj ŝia ventro estis rondega kiel malgranda monteto. Ŝi rifuzis fari iun laboron antaŭ la nasko. Ŝi diris,ke kia ajn fizika streĉo domaĝos la sanon de la bebo en ŝia utero,aŭ misfigurigos ĝin. Ŝi diris,ke ŝi devas naski la plej belan infanon en la mondo,la plej sanan,tiel ke li fariĝu unuaranga terkulturisto--kaj ŝi estis neŝanceleble certa,ke ĝi estos "li" kaj ne "ŝi". Maŭmaŭ kredis ŝiajn vortojn,sekve li faris ĉion por ŝi,inkluzive de forpurigo de ŝia nokta fekaĵo. Kaj ŝi rifuzis manĝi malmolan nutraĵon. Do Maŭmaŭ persone devis certigi,ke ĉiu kuirita plado estas "tiel mola kiel kotono",laŭ la esprimo de Korvino mem.

Uncle Pan suddenly turned pale at the words,feeling something wrong with the request. He hesitated and began to scratch his bald head. "Well,well,I...I..."
"Tell me at once,please! You must know where Mao Mao's cottage is. Don't you remember that morning I handed over Mao Mao to you? You're responsible for him. We want him now!" The man's voice was threatening.
"Well,well..." Uncle Pan stuttered,eyeing at the pistol on which the man had laid his hand. "Well,I don't know whether he is in or not."
"Take us to his place. I beg you!" The man shouted.
"All right,then," Uncle Pan murmured,on the point of weeping.
Unwillingly he moved in the direction of Mao Mao's house. The strange visitors followed him with heavy steps.
Mao Mao was in,busy at preparing a meal for his wife in the kitchen. For a long while he did not come out,for he must wait till the food was well cooked. She-crow had been pregnant for several months and her belly bulged up like a small hill. She refused to do any work before the delivery. She said that any kind of physical exertion would damage the health of the baby in her womb or disfigure its shape. She said that she must bear the most beautiful child in the world,the most healthy,so that he would make a first-rate farm worker-and she was as sure as a pikestaff that it would be a "he" and not "she". Mao Mao believed in her words,so he did everything for her,including the clearning of her night stool. And she refused to eat hard food. So Mao Mao must see to it personally that every dish was cooked "as soft as cotton," to use She-crow's own words.
