11.24 "Ne,s'rino," Onklo Pan haltigis ŝin per voĉo tremanta. "Mi ne malsatas,s'rino,kvankam mi nenion manĝis jam de kelka tempo..." Li paŭzis. Post iom da tempo,per mallaŭta voĉo,li daŭrigis,"S'rino,Maŭmaŭ estas mortinta!"
"Mortinta!" mia patrino kriis,terurite.
"Tio estas malgaja historio,s'rino. Mi tion ne atendis. Vi scias,ke Maŭmaŭ estis arestita de la falsa virino,kiun li serioze batadis post nia prirabado kaj kiun li kondukis ĝis la ĉefsidejo de sia Ordkonserva Korpuso por torturado. Li tre timis tiun falsan virinon,s'rino,mi scias,ĉar tiu persono estas revolucia spiono kaj foje minacis pendumi Maŭmaŭ-on vivantan,se iam denove li agus kontraŭ revolucio. Do Maŭmaŭ iĝis terure nervoza survoje al la gubernia urbo,pensante ke oni torturos lin por informoj,kiujn li neniom havis,kaj poste pendumos lin. Unu el la soldatoj,kiujn mi renkontis,sciigis al mi,ke Maŭmaŭ tremegis la tutan vojon pro timo. Kiam ili proksimiĝis al la urbo,Maŭmaŭ ne plu havis forton por paŝi. Poste ili trenis lin perforte al la urbopordo. Ĝuste kiam ili transiris la ponton super la akvofosaĵo,Maŭmaŭ subite ĵetis sin en la akvon sube. La akvo estas tre profunda tie,s'rino,vi scias."

"No,ma'am," Uncle Pan stopped her,his voice trembling. "I'm not hungry,ma'am,although I haven't had anything to eat for some time..." He paused. After a while,in a low voice,he went on,"Ma'am,Mao Mao is dead!"
"Dead!" my mother shouted with horror.
"It's a sad story,ma'am. I never expected it. You know Mao Mao was arrested by the false woman,whom he had beaten badly after our burglary case and whom he brought to the headquarters of his Order Preveration Corps for torture. He was very afraid of this false woman,ma'am,I know,because the fellow is a revolutionary spy and once threatened to hang Mao Mao alive if he did anything against revolution again. So Mao Mao became terribly nervous on the way to the County City,thinking he would he tortured for information,of which he had none,and then hanged. One of the soldiers whom I met told me that Mao Mao was shivering all the way with fear. When they were nearing the city,Mao Mao had no longer any strength to move his steps. Then they dragged him by force to the city gate. Just as they were crossing the bridge over the moat,Mao Mao suddenly threw himself into the water below. The water was very deep there,ma'am,you know."
