11.28 "Multaj aferoj pensigas min pri tio nun,s'rino."
"Ĉu mi rajtas aŭdi pri ili?" Mia patrino nervoziĝis.
"Morto,unuavice. Kiam mi estis juna,mi tute ne pensis pri morto. Sed nun jes. Mi volas entombiĝi proksime al miaj praŭloj,s'rino. Kaj Korvino,duavice. Neeble,ke mi frontu ŝin. Se mi sciigos al ŝi la novaĵon,ŝi eble sin transdonos al frenezeco kaj batos forte sian ventron,kiel ŝi ordinare faras en tiaj cirkonstancoj,tiel ke ŝi okazigu trofruan naskiĝon de ŝia bebo. Ŝi devas havi sanan,bonan bebon por daŭrigi la familian linion de Maŭmaŭ. Nur tion postlasis kompatinda Maŭmaŭ en tiu ĉi mondo. Mi ne tolerus vidi,ke ĝi estus domaĝita."
"Sed tio ĉi estas via hejmo,Onklo." Mia patrino fingromontris al la tero. "Vi helpis konstrui la familion. Sen vi ĝi ne plu estus familio."
"Mi scias,s'rino. Sed ĉio estas jam tiel ŝanĝiĝinta. La vilaĝo nun ŝajnas al mi fremda. Ankaŭ la urbeto. Eĉ Alan..."
"Mi komprenas,kion vi celas diri," mia patrino interrompis lin. "Sed ni estas samaj. Ŝanĝiĝas nur la gejunuloj. Baldaŭ ni ne plu havos rilatojn kun ili. Ni apartenas al la malnova tempo,vidu. Junĉi baldaŭ ricevos sian dividendon,mi supozas. Tiam ni emeritiĝos. Ni fermos niajn orelojn kaj okulojn al la nuna mondo."

"Death,in the first place. When I was young I did not think of death. But now I do. I wanted to be buried near my ancestors,ma'am. And She-crow,in the second place. I can't possibly face her. If I break the news to her she might give herself up to a fit of madness and beat her belly violently as she usually does under such circumstances,so as to cause the premature birth of her baby. She must have a healthy,good baby in order to continue Mao Mao's family line. It is the only thing poor Mao Mao left in this morld. I cannot bear seeing it damaged."
"But this is your home,Uncle." My mother pointed to the ground. "You've helped build up the household. Without you it no longer would be a household."
"I know,ma'am. But everything is now so different. The village seems so stranger to me now. So does the town. Even O Ran..."
"I understand what you mean," my mother interrupted him. "But we are the same. Only the younger people change. Soon we shall have nothing to do with them. We are of the old time,you see. Yunchi will soon get his bonus,I expect. Then we shall retire. We shall shut our ears and eyes to the present world."
