12.11 La tri paragrafoj mem altiris tre malmulte da atento ĉar niaj vilaĝanoj apenaŭ komprenis ilin. Sed la ekzemplo mem kaŭzis ĝeneralan agitiĝon. Ĉiuj staris gapantaj,fiksrigardante unu alian,kaj tenis teruran silenton. Neniu iam ajn suspektis,ke Onklo Pejfu estas perfidulo. Tiu maljuna instruisto ĉiam randis malsaton,kaj pro tio li fariĝis plej ridinda skeletfiguro,miopa kaj ĝiba. Oni ĉiam kaŝe priridis lin pro lia komika aspekto,kvankam samtempe li estis respektata pro sia kapablo legi kaj skribi. Nun tiu kompatinda figuro ŝajnis ŝanceliĝi antaŭ niaj okuloj. Ial ni sentis malĝojon.
"Estas domaĝe! Estas domaĝe!" Benĉin diris suspire. "Ke pilastro de la edukado faris perfidaĵon kontraŭ la ŝtaton!" Li uzis kiel eble plej multajn elegantajn vortojn por imponi al la ĉeestantaj analfabetaj terkulturistoj. Poste li daŭrigis,proponante sin kiel posteulon de l' missorta instruisto sur la kampo de klerigo. "Tio ja estas granda domaĝo al la gepatroj. Kiu instruos iliajn infanojn? Tio min ĝenas,ĉar mi ne povas fari samtempe du taskojn. Se oni petos min instruistiĝi,mi devos rezigni pri la pastrado,kion mi ne tre volas fari."

The three paragraphs themselves attracted very little attention because our villagers could hardly understand them. But the example itself caused a general stir. All stood agape,staring at one another,and maintained a dead silence. No one had ever suspected that Uncle Peifu was a traitor. This old school teacher had always been on the verge of starvation,and because of this he had developed into the most ridiculous figure of a skeleton,short-sighted and hunchbacked. He was always laughed at behind the back for his comical looks,although highly respected at the same time for his ability to read and to write. Now this pathetic figure seemed to be wavering unsteadily before our eyes. Somehow we felt sad.
"It's a pity! It's a pity!" Benchin said with a sigh. "That a pillar of education should have committed treason against the state!" He used as many elegant words as possible in order to impress our illiterate farmhands on the spot. Then he went on,suggesting himself as the successor of the unfortunate schoolmaster in the field of teaching. "It is a great loss for the parents indeed. Who is going to teach their children? I am rather worried,because I can't do two jobs at one time. If they ask me to be a teacher then I must give up preaching,which I am rather unwilling to do."
