"Mi sentas same,s'rino.
Kaj li foriris, marŝante malfirme kiel fantomo.
La postan tagon,ĉirkaŭ tagmezo,Benĉin reŝanceliĝis en nian dometon, multe pli febla kaj pli trema ol antaŭe. Ŝajnis,ke li tute ne estis dorminta. Liaj okuloj elstaris delire kaj rigardis rekte antaŭen kiel paro da vitraj okuloj, senesprimaj kaj stultaj.

"I will,ma'am. Since the revolutionaries came I've been forbidden to do it. I shall enjoy doing it again."
"Pleased do it properly," my mother said. "Here is some money to buy incense and paper." She took from her purse a handful of copper coins and handed them to Benchin. As our priest took the money she murmured,"It seems as though Uncle Peifu were already dead."
"I've the same feeling,ma'am. I feel unhappy, too, without knowing why," Benchin remarked dejectedly.
And he left, walking unsteadily like a ghost.
The next day, towards noon,Benchin tottered into our house again, much weaker and more shaky than before. It seemed as though he had not slept a wink. His eyes stood out deliriously and stared straight like a pair of glass eyes, dull and stupid. His lips were twitching fitfully right and left, emitting some kind of sound, incoherent like murmur, but even like a prayer. He remained at the door, leaning against the doorpost like a beggar. As my mother and I went near to greet him,we began to make out what he was muttering about.
