My mother turned to stone. Her hands that had rested on the priest's shoulders fell mechanically. Her eyes became as delirious and dull and stupid as Benchin's. A string of disconnected words fell slowly from her lips: "So Uncle Peifu was executed..." But suddenly she started as though waking up from a nightmare, and asked the priest again: "Did you pray for him? Did you pray God not to reincarnate him into a schoolmaster again?"
"I don't know. I don't know. Ha! Ha! Uncle Peifu is there. There he is!" He pointed at the highway,on which two strangers were coming along in the direction of our village. "There is Uncle Peifu, see? Uncle Peifu comes with Chumin's steward to ask me to take up his job in the school. No! No! I won't take it. Uncle Peifu! How are you,my old man?" He shouted at the two people and simultaneously dashed to them.
They met in the middle of the village square, where Lao Liu used to set up his drum stand and tell stories in the good old days. One of the newcomer asked Benchin: "Are you the Taoist priest of the village?"
