When I came back and showed the letter to my mother, she smiled, saying, "Strange that the dream has come true. Our souls are now in communication with that of Laipao's at night. Laipao has now really become a regular member of our family. Poor thing,we shouldn't let him do night watching any more. We have no more cows to be stolen." She paused for a while. Then she said again, "Read the letter to me,will you, son?"
I tore the letter open and read. "I've heard what had happened to our native district," the letter said. "It is nothing particularly shocking to me. Much worse things have happened in this big town. Hundreds of young people and students have been shot. But I think and hope that our eldest son is still all right in Shanghai, although I haven't heard from him for ages. As to my business,it hasn't gone so smoothly as we expected ..." Suddenly I felt a black patch shifting right and left before my eyes, and I could not continue reading.
"Go on,son!" was my mother's anxious voice.
