12.27 Mia patrino batetis milde lian kapon kaj volis diri ion al li.
Do ni ekiris. Mi antaŭe,mia patrino malantaŭ mi;kaj Lajbaŭ malantaŭ mia patrino, naive svingante la voston. Li ne sciis,ke tio estos vojaĝo longa.

My mother tapped his head gently and wanted to say something to him. But as soon as she opened her lips, her voice quivered and her eyes became veiled with tears. Somehow I felt my heart heavy at the sight. So I turned my head away, pretending not to see. In front of me stood a huge, ancient tree. I caught the sight of a poster stuck high up on its trunk. It was left behind by the revolutionaries. In order to appear natural,I read out the words as though trying to enjoy myself:
WE SHALL COME BACK AGAIN!
My mother seemed to have perceived my intention. And certainly she had heard what I was saying. So she secretly dried her tears with her sleeve and tried to look strong, saying in an artificially natural tone in response to what I murmured,"I doubt it!" Just at the moment some naive cowherd in the hills not far away tuned up the old, familiar, silly song. As it was not sung in chorus as it used to be,the note had a rather sad touch:
Aiyu,ai-yu,ai-aiyu,ai-yo-ho-o,ai-ho ...
Aiyu,ai-yu,ai-aiyu,ai-yo-ho-o,ai-ho ...
This yellow earth gave us rice in spring
Ang in autumn, soya beans and sweet potato.
My mother remained attentively silent till it was finished. And she waited for a few minutes more, till the ringing of the echo vanished in the air. Then, with a deep sigh which she could not suppress, she added, "Son,you're right. WE SHALL COME BACK AGAIN. This is the place of our birth,a place of our ancestors and of our kind."
"Yes,mother," I said while my eyes still rested on the poster: "WE SHALL ..." Before I could finish the sentence a sudden explosion of cannon-balls rumbled in the distance, interrupting me and breaking the centuries-old tranquillity of the country morning.
"Let's hurry," my mother said in great haste. "Let's hurry on our way."
So we started out. I went in front,my mother behind me;and Laipao behind my mother, innocently wagging his tail. He did not know that it was going to be a long journey.
